ABOUT Red Dirt Farms
Red Dirt Farms is a small 2.5 acre hobby farm run by Andrew and Amanda. The farm is giving their two boys the chance to grow up loving the outdoors, as well as an understanding of treating and raising animals ethically. The farm currently consists of 99 layer hens, 12 beef cows, 1 dog and 4 horses. Knowing that our farm is providing healthy eggs and beef, not only for ourselves but for others as well, gives us a great sense of satisfaction.
Egg Sales Info
Our hens are given free access each and everyday to pasture where they roam and eat the things nature intended them to eat. Pasture raised means they have the ability to freely roam the fields and also have access to the barn for shade and cover. They eat a diet made up of foraged grubs and insects and provided non-gmo suplimental feed. The climate of Langley does not allow for us to forgo a suplimental feed as our growing season is fairly short and the hens do not move around much during the rain as they are not water proof. As soon as the rain stops they are back out finding grubs, seeds and the like. As a result of our hens natural feed routine, our eggs have deeper coloured yolks and a richer flavour than the eggs you might be used to from the store. Pasture raised eggs also contain more nutrients than conventional eggs purchased from the store. Our hens are happy and you can taste the difference. Eggs are sold at $7.00/dozen. Below is a CBC Marketplace report on the differences between the choices of eggs.
Our cows enjoy a life of leisure and care that cows on a feed lot will never experience. As a small hobby farm, we can give them a quality of life that large farms just cannot provide.
Our cows are only fed grass. We do not feed them any grains or other feeds that many large operations do in order to fatten them up quick and get them out to market. No corn, steroids or antibiotics. We believe our cattle should eat only what they would eat naturally. As a result you get a more flavourful meat.
We sell beef based on the hanging weight in packages of 1/8, 1/4, or 1/2 sides of the cow. The hanging weight of the cow is the weight of the carcass before it is trimmed and deboned. Our price of $9/pound is based off of this weight as all the butcher costs are based off of the hanging weight of the cow. It is usual for the actual weight of the packaged meat you receive to be 30-45% less than the hanging weight due to trimming of fat, waste and bones. Each side receives a portion of all the cuts. This means you receive a portioned amount of ground beef, steaks, roasts and soup bones with each side.
In general our cows come in around 4-600 pounds hanging weight so the price averages between $900-1350 per 1/4. With this you get a 1/4 of all the cuts available. Here is what one of our past 1/4 sides of beef had for cuts to give you an idea of what you would receive.
